1.Rxd6 Qxd6
2.Nxf7 Rxf7
3.Re8+ Rf8
4.Qd2
No, 3 … Rf8
4 Rxf8#
The sole defender of f8 was wiped out on the first move.
Mark
After,
4.Rxf8
then the queen on d6 takes back,
4…Qxf8
i agree with anonymous 11:07
1. Rxd6…
The center of the board is much more important than a direct assault on black’s kingside position.
Also a thank you to GM Susan Polgar for the article she posted on me Saturday morning. I used to go to bed with a book that my dad gave about the Polgar sisters when I was 6. i promise to all to stay humble, make a good showing on my next U.S. tournament in Dallas in April (Kasparov) and then on the Pan American Chess Championship in Ecuador this summer. Thanks Susan.

I am not quite convinced by Rxd6.
White sacs a whole rook to win queen for rook in the end.
Makes about a queen for two rooks….
I think black can still play after 4. Qd2, Rxe8 5. Qxd6, Ne6
I was thinking about 1. Qd2 immidiately but black seems to have defenses.
I do not think the problem is solved yet, have to rethink later.
Regards from Germany
Jochen
How about
1.Rxd6 Qxd6
2.Nxf7 Rxf7
3.Qd2 hitting the Q and h6, and black’s back rank still needs guarding?
Jochen, you must be kidding to be not convinced by the line given by the first anonymous.
Of course 5.. Ne6 isn’t holding, eg. 6.Qxc6. This ain’t rocket science.
3.Qd2 seems to work after
3…Ne4
4.Rxe4 Bxf5
5.Qxd6 Bxe4
6.Qxh6 Bh7
(6…Kg8 7.Bxg7 Rxg7 8.Qe6+)
7.Qxc6
But I think 4.Qd2 is better after,
4…Rxe8
5.Qxd6 Be6
(5…Bxf5?? 6.Qxh6, and it will be mate on g7, 5…Ne6 6.Qxc6, Black has to give up heavy material. 6…Rg8 (6…Bb7 7.Qxb7, and white has mating threats on g7)7.Qxa8)
6.Qxc5, and white has a decisive
advantage
Rxd6 is the correct move. Happy meal anyone?

How about the immediate Nf7?The rook cannot take so there are two moves of black:1….Qf7, or 1…Kg8
1….Kg8 2.Bh7 Kf7 3.Qg6 mate
1….Qf7 2.Rd6 (threatening Rh6)How can black defend the pawn h6(because there are lines with Qh7)
I agree with the first post,
1. RxB QxR
2. Nxf7+ RxN
3. Re8+ Rf8
4. Qd2
as 4. … RxR
5. QxQ
is forced. White’s attack is blunted, but the position is winning.
