Very nice tactic.
1.Rh8 Kg7
2.Kg5 Kxh8
3.Kg6 Nh6
4.Kxh6 and wins
Sunday brain challenge
1.Rh8 Kg7
2.Kg5 Kxh8
3.Kg6 Nf6
4.Rd8 Ne4+
5.Kf4 Nxd6
6.Rxd7+ Nf7
7.Kf5
It took me a while to figure out why cfdincle’s solution is a win. Got there in the end.
First of all, 3. … Ne7 4. dxe7 and 3. … Nf6 4. Kxf6 are straightforward white wins.
After 3. … Nh6:
4. Kxh6 Kg8
5. Kg6 Kf8 (5. … Kh8? 6. Kf7!)
6. Kf6 Ke8 (again, 5. … Kg8? Ke7!)
7. Kg7! Kd8
8. Kf7 Kc8
9. Ke7 and black’s pawn is toast, plus no way black can stop the white pawn’s promotion.
Thanks for this analysis, guys! (And for the problem, of course!) Mark
1.Rh8 Kg7
2.Kg5
if black declines the rook
2. … Nf6
then what?
