Azerbaijan’s SOCAR chess club starts European Cup with victory

The first round of the 26th European Cup among chess clubs has been played in Plovdiv (Bulgaria). The recently established Azerbaijani club SOCAR played Macedonian Gambit-Asseco-See Skopje in the starting match and won 5.5:0.5.
Russian Alexander Grishuk, French Maxim Vashier-Lagrave, Uzbek Rustam Kasimjanov, as well as Azerbaijani chess player Rauf Mammadov and Eltaj Safarli won within SOCAR.
Azerbaijan’s club leader Shahriyar Mammadyarov held a draw on the first board. Teymur Rajabov and Alexei Shirov missed the first round.
In the second round today SOCAR will be playing Belgian Eynatten-KSK4. On the whole, the contest involves 49 clubs. The European cup will consist of seven rounds and complete on October 23.
