Maybe all can start with 1) Qh8+
if 1) …, Rxh8;
2) Rxf7, Kg8;
3) Rf8+, Kg7;
4) R1f7+, Kh6;
5) Rxh8#
if 1) …, Ke7;
2) Qf6+, Kxd7;
3) Qc6+, Kd8;
4) Qf8+, Kd7;
5) Rxf7+, Rxf7;
6) Rxf7#
Did I miss something?
Ciao
Luigi
Qa8+

Qa8+
Qh8+
1. Qh8+ .. Ke7
(1 .. Rxh8 leads to a mate in three for White)
2. Qe8+ .. Kd6
3. Rc3
1 Qh8+ and if 1… Rxh8 2 Txf7+ leads to mate
Wow, what a move: 1. Qh8+! if Ke7 declining the sacrifce white can prosaicly play Qe8+ followed by Bxc8 or even stronger 2. Rxf7+!, Rxf7 3. Rxf7+, Kxf7 4. Qxh2 +-
The “normal” answer 1. -, Rxh8 leads to mate: 2. Rxf7+, Kg8 3. Rf8+, Kg7/h7 4. R1f7+, Kh6 5. Rxh8#
And once again: wow. I really like this one, did Howell find it?
1. Qh8+ Kd7 (1. … Rxh8; 2. Rxf7+ Kg8; 3. Rf8+ Kg7; 4. R(1)f7+ Kh6; 5. Rxh8#
2. Rxf7+ Rxf7
3. Rxf7+ Kxf7
4. Qxh2 +-
Hope this is right. Sent from my iPhone so I’m basically typing these notes from memory. (Blindfold chess is hard!)
Here is a more interesting line:
1. Qh8+
If black accepts the sacrifice,
1. … Rxh8
2. Rxf7+ Kg8
3. Be6
Mate is forced.
If black declines,
1. … Ke7
2. Rxf7+ Rxf7
3. Rxf7+ Kxf7
4. Qxh2
White has queen for rook and better pawns.
1.Qh8+
1…. Rxh8
2.Rf7+ Kg8
3.Rf8+ Kg7
4.R1f7+ Kh6
5.Rxh8#
1…. Ke7
2.Rxf7+ Rxf7
3.Rxf7 Kxf7
4.Qxh2 +-
Qh8+ Rh8 (Ke7 Rf7+) Rf7+ Kg8 Rf8+ Kg7 R1f7+ Kh6 Rh8#
1. Qh8+ Ke7 (forced)
because
1… RxQ
2. Rxf7+ Kg8
3. Rf8+ Kg7/h7
4. R1-f7+ Kh6
5. Rxh8#
now there are tons of ways to win material. e.g.,
2. Qe8+ and Bxc8 wins a piece.
or 2. Rxf7+ RxR
3. RxR+ KxR
4. QxQ
Black’s 1st on my post should have been Ke7, not Kd7. My memory isn’t what it used to be, as far as I can remember.
1.Qh8+ Rxh8
2.Rxf7+ Kg8
3.Rf8+ Kh7
4.R1f7 Kh6
5.Rxh8++
