On weekends, Michael-David Mangini plays chess on his computer.

The Ridgefield 15-year-old is hooked on the game and it has paid off. On March 25, he won the High School State Championship held by the Connecticut Chess Association. The Ridgefield High School freshman is the state of Connecticut chess champion, high school division.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Michael-David said. “I wasn’t expecting to win. The state championship held at Yale is a huge tournament. I was just trying to do well. It was incredible to win. I was totally elated.”

He is considered one of the top 50 chess students nationwide and plans to compete at The National Scholastic Denker tournament in Philadelphia in August. He also will have the opportunity to play in the scholastic section of the U.S. Open Championship, which is attended by national and international grandmasters.
