The Mon Roi company was present at my simul last night in Las Vegas. Each player was equipped with a Mon Roi score keeping device and all games were broadcast LIVE for the world to see. It took the players no time at all to learn how to use it. Very simple and the technology is truly awesome!!
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
I used it and it was very easy.
What are the advantages of this new device?
This company never return emails or voice messages… grr….
Aloha,
I recieved mine PCM a few days ago, and was able to easily record my games, but had to buy a SD512 card for a few extra dollars, with it I can downlaod my games to my computer to anaylze later. It saves me the trouble to writting the moves, its quick and easy. Since I have no PTM can not use this function, but in future I hope most tournaments (TD’s) will have it so that games can be uploaded and reveiw on the Internet as indicated on their web site. Hope the cost goes down too!! Anyway if you dislike writing chess noatation, but want to be able to do it easier and with less errors this may be the key. Of course if have a PDA you could use that (but will need to discuss with TD). MonRoi has been endorsed, by FIDE, USCF, Suasan Polgar and others. For additional information go to:
http://www.monroi.com/products_personal.html
You can even down load both the PTM and PCM manuals to reveiw. Most of your answers will be there. This device may not be in everyone’s budget, but if your serious about improving and want to study your games to improve your chess game this may be a helpful device! As for emails and calls to MonRoi have not needed to do that so far!
If know of something that can this better let us know!
Mahalo!
My kids both have Mon Roi and love them!! They are very easy to use and I don’t have to enter games in the computer any more. The notation is more complete and accurate.
By the way, Mon Roi is very good of responding to my questions and concern. Strongly recommend it to young players.
buy a package of pencils, its cheaper.
I can understand the comment above to just “buy pencils, it’s cheaper”. But I think the benefits of MonRoi are too easily under-estimated.
Our WA state magazine editor has to manually enter games for publication, a tedious time-consuming chore. MonRoi could solve that.
After a weekend tournament, I want Fritz to auto-analyze my games. I dislike having to enter them into my computer by hand, just to get .PGN files. MonRoi would solve that.
At tournaments, copies of most game scores are Not turned in for the TD. The problem is people record their games in their small wire-bound booklets, so there is no copy handy (photocopying is usually not available, and is never free anyway). MonRoi would solve this.
On Monday after playing in a big weekend tournament, I would like to go to our state chess website and download .PGN files from various games from the tournament. During the tournament I walk around and get interested in games I get to see only brief slices of. MonRoi could solve this.
Twenty years from now, computer file storage has become much cheaper, I can imagine all game scores being reported to and stored by the USCF (not just the win-loss result), available on their website.
I see lots of potential. But the cost is too high, so far.

The thing cost nearly $400 bucks. Would be cheaper to get a lifetime supply of pencils. Furthermore, manually key-ing in the games doesn’t take too much time, and it refreshes my memory. $400 is too much money to spent on a piece of luxury item, and the money could be better spent on something else…

I love my money and will not give it to others.
“This company never return emails or voice messages… grr….”
That sounds like a lie. A big company such as that one, aiming to take over Microsoft? Who are you kidding?
$400? PDA’s could be used for a fraction of the price…One danger though is that PDA’s can have master level computer chess programs on them!
How can I know if a tournament allows this device?

??? Why does it sound like a lie? Your explanation doesn’t make sense
I got mine for about $450 (shipping + tax). It worked really well…

But I have to agree, it’s a piece of luxury, not necessity. Can live without it too…
I experienced watching the MonRoi at work. It looked great! Not sure if you need glasses to see the small display, maybe best for the young and healthy. Hope the price goes under 100$, when I’ll buy it.
