1. a8 wins
1. ..Nxf2!
Now, if 2. Qxf2, then 2. ..Rh1+ followed by 3. Kxh1 Qxf2, wins the Queen for a rook.
Any move other than 2. Qxf2 leads to 2. .. Rh1 mate
Nice one…
1. ..Rh1+
2. Kh1 Qh6+
3. Kg1 Qh2#
1 rh1+ 2KxR Qh6+ 3Kg1 Qh2 mate
1… Rh1+
1…Ra1+ 2. Kxa1 Qh6+, checkmate the next move.
1.Rh1+ KxR
2.Qh6+ Kg1
3.Qh1++
Well — if it weren’t for a8Q, my comment above would work…
Instead:
1. .. Rh1+
2. Kxh1 Qh6+
3. Kg1 Qh2 mate
This should do it 🙂
This indeed is a special pattern. Took me a while to figure out. I was misled by 1…e3 for sometime before finding the correct solution
1…Rh1+!!
2.Kxh1 Qh6+!! (the point)
3.Kg1 Qh2#
Rh1+ Kxh1 and Qh6+ mates.
1…Rh1+ wins
2. Kxh1 Qh6+ 3.Kg1 Qh2#
“1. ..Nxf2! Now, if 2. Qxf2, then 2. ..Rh1+ followed by 3. Kxh1 Qxf2, wins the Queen for a rook.” It does not work, I think, because there is 4.a8Q+ and white is a rook up.
1…Rh1+! 2. Kh1 Qh6+ 3. Kg1 Qh2++
1. …Rh1+ 2. Kh1 Qh6+, 3. Kg1 Qh2#
1…. Qh6.
Rh1 wins
Rh1+, Kxh1, Qh6+, Kg1, Qh2mate
1…Rh1 check
followed by Qh6 check
and Qh2 checkmate
If we miss mate in 3 starting with rook to h1.We should not miss mate in 3 starting with Qh6.
1…Rh1+ 2.Kxh1 Qh6+ 3.Kg1 Qh2#.
1… Rh1+ 2. Kxh1 Qh6+ 3. Kg1 Qh2#
Hi Susan Polgar,
Nice puzzle,no doubt as of the current piece position is concerned, White piece has best advantage but clever Black piece can win the game in a simple but interesting way.
Black piece wins the game as given below.
1. .. Qh6
2.a8(Q)+ Kh7
3.Q*Rh8 K*Qh8
4.Ra8+ Kh7
5.Be3 Qh2++ mate.
Variation exist but still Black piece wins the game. ” Black Piece best initial move “Qh6”.

Nxf2 than a8 for the Queen with Check and white is winning
Rh1+
Qh6+
Qh2++
You forgot about a8/Q+ after Nxf2. How do we escape the checks after a8/Q?
TimLovesTiffanie
Rh1, Qh6, Qh2 mate
1…Rh1+ ! 2 K:h1 Qh6+ and then check mate
1…Rh1+ 2.Kxh1 Qh6+ 3.Kg1 Qh2 mate!
rh1 kill white
dear Anonymous, it is black’s move.This is a puzzle with “L” tag.
1…. Rh1+
2 Kxh1 Qh6+
3 Kg1 Qh2#
1…Rh1+! appears trivial.
1. … Rh1+
2. Kxh1 Qh6+
3. Kg1 Qh2#
Just to be clear, 1. …Qh6 will not win for black:
1. …..Qh6??
2. a8(Q)Kh7
Or [2. …Kf7 3.Qc4 Kg6 4.Ra6 Nf6 5.Rf6 gf6 6.Qag8! Rg8 (or 6. …Kh5 7.Qe2#) 7.Qg8 Kh5 8.b6 and the pawn can’t be stopped]. Continuing:
3. Qh8 Kh8
4. Qb1 Qh2
5. Kf1 e3 (What else down a rook?)
6. Ra8 Kh7
7. Qf5 and the mate is unstoppable.
Many chess blogs called this one correct. The key here was sacrifice (rook).
Rh1+
Kh1(white)
Qh6+
Kg1(white)
Qh2++
Hi Susan Polgar,
Hi Yancey Ward,
Well,Black piece initial move “Rh1” the best but “Qh6” will also fetch a win for Black piece.
Well in chess,every player’s move should be in such a way that it should neutralize and transfix the opponent’s move.
Your concern is,at one point if White piece reply is “Qb1” followed Kf1 then the mating opportunity for Black piece is eluded !
If White piece moves to Ke2,Black can reply with “Q*g2 followed by Qf3+” thereafter continuous check to White King with the combination of Knight,Queen,Pawn – leads Black piece to win the game.
So Black piece can win by playing “Qh6” though not as easy as “Rh1” .

1. …Rh1+
2. KxRh1 (only move) Qh3+
3. Kg1 Qh2#
Poor King traped on his own pieces!
1…Rh1+
2. KxRh1 (only move) Qh3+
3. Kg1 (forced) Qh2#
Poor King trapped on his own pieces!
