Special endgame Puzzle Solving, Special endgame White to move. How should White proceed? 8/5k2/1KP5/8/2Nr4/8/8/8 w – – 0 1 Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
I think Ne5+ followed by c7 wins for white.
1 Ne5+ wins
1 … Ke6
2 c7 Rb4+
3 Kc5 +-
1 … Ke7
2 c7 Rd8 (hoping for 3 cxd8 Kxd8=)
3 Nc6+
final attempt is
1 … Ke8 to avoid the N fork on c6. However, white still wins:
2 c7 Rd8
3 Kb7 +- zugzwang!
Thanks for the interesting puzzle, Susan!
1 Ne5 is the only move I can find to win. Then:
A: 1…Ke6 2 c7 Ke5 (2…Rb4 3 Ka5 is no help for Black) 3 c8=Q and White has a winning ending if he knows the right technique
B: 1…Ke8 is the most stubborn.
2 c7 Rd8 3 Kb7! (3 Nc6?? Rd7=) Ke7 4 Nc6 wins

Ne5 Ke8
c7 Rd8
Nf7 Ra8
Kb7 Kd7
Ne5 Kd6
Nc4 Kd7
Nb6 Kany
Na8
I think this is simply
1. Ne5+ followed by c7.
The knight will cover also the “c” column from checks.
1. Ne5+ Ke8
2. c7 Rd8
3. Kb7 zugzwang (the rook is lost)
Any Rb4+ is met by Ka5.
I think this is simple:
1) Ne5+,…;
White queens the pawn and has to win a King+Queen vx King+Rook ending.
Ciao

it seems simple but maybe there is an other solution avoiding the queen against rook ending 1.Ne5+ (1. …Ke7 2.c7 Rd8 3. Nc6+) Ke6 2.c7 i think the pawn is queening
fan of tal and judit and morozevic and anderssen
maybe the difficulty was to avoid 1.Kc5 Rd8 2.c7 Rc8 3.Nd6+ Ke6 4.Nxc8 Kd7 5.Kb6 Kxc8 6.Kc6
now i found my fault: after 1.Ne5 Ke8 2.c7 Rd8 i cannot improve for white
oohh its so lovely now 3.Kb7 is very beautiful
chess is marvellous thanks so much susan!! it goes on and on: 1.Ne5+ Ke8 2.c7 Rd6+ 3.Ka7 (3.Kb7 Rd8 seems draw after 4.Nc6 Rd7) Rd8 4.Kb7
1.Ne5+! and wherever the King moves, 2.c7.
