What complications?! This is too easy!
Rxg5+ !
OK, smarty pants. Rxg5 Nxg5 then what? You resign. Good one.
Am I missing something? Qf7+ followed by Rxf6+ and Q g6 mate.
1. Rxf6 [threatening 2. Qg6+ and 2. Qf7+; Black’s 1 … Bf4+ will be met with 2. Rxf4 keeping all threats alive] 1 … [anything] xf6 and White will have a pleasant choice between:
(A) 2. Qg6+ Kf8 3. Qf7#
(B) 2. Qf7+ Kh6 3. Qg6#
Of course, the fourth anonymous is right – it is 1. Qf7+ and 2. Rxf6+ with simple mate.
The same idea (sacrificing the rook with check to open the bishop’s diagonal) appears twice – once (if played immediately) it fails to Nxg5, second time it wins.
1. Rxf6 immediately fails to exf6 and the black queen has control over f7.
Greetings

benno wiese from chess club lasker berlin always told this story: there is some famous player in chess history (i’ve forgotten his name), who always prefered capturing the queen over giving mate: “let me first capture the queen, to get safety, afterwards i can still mate”. so this guy would play 1.Qf7 Kh6 2.Rxf6+ exf6 3.QxQ hihihi
And what would that player do after 2. -, Nxf6!!, he?
Probably he (or she?) would surrender saying: ” I just thought I would win your queen but I did not see that defense!”
hihihi, too 🙂
If the N x f6 then Qg6 is mate
hi im new here, when there is a puzzle to be solved, where do i find the answers?
Another pick from the ‘Rook unblocks the B-diagonal’ chapter, see the previous puzzle (with the wooden board I prefer).
So the meta-question is “What is the uncited source”.
Could we have the FEN definitions included in the posts please? Makes filing in my notebook easier.
For the new anonymous, the “solutions” are put forwarded and debated by anyone with an opinion, and it usually becomes apparent what is the correct one. So read through the lines posted, and see which one you think works. Susan sometimes helps out if none of us quite get it!
