So wins ‘Battle of GMs’ title

World’s youngest GM Wesley So ruled the “Battle of GMs” chess competition by notching 8.5 points in the tournament finals at the Citystate Hotel in Manila.

Sportsnews.ph reported that So agreed to split the point with three-time national junior champion Jon Paul Gomez in 30 moves of the French to finish,, since he was already assured of the title after the 10th round.

With 8.5 points on six wins and five draws, So received the tournament’s P200,000 top prize.

“Masayang-masaya po ako dahil hindi nasayang ang mga pagsisikap ko,” So was quoted as saying.

The 14-year-old finished one point ahead Asia’s first GM Eugene Torre and IM Richard Bitoon. Torre halved the point with GM Rogelio Antonio Jr., while Bitoon defeated GM Buenevanetura “Bong” Villlamayor to share second to third places with 7.5 points apiece.

Gomez grabbed fourth place with seven points, followed by Antonio with 6.5. NM Rolando Nolte won sixth place with 5.5 points. It was the third straight championship for So in a span of two months.
