AFTER FAILING their mission to qualify in the prestigious World Cup, Filipino Grandmasters Wesley So, Eugene Torre, Mark Paragua and Darwin Laylo and International Masters Richard Bitoon and Rolando Nolte will start their bid in the Zone 3.3 Chess Championships which gets under way in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

So, the country’s top player who totes a July-Fide rating of 2646 will face Vietnamese FM Nguyen Hong Ly (2302) using the black pieces. The 15-year-old Bacoor, Cavite, campaigner is the top seed in this 54-player field, elimination for this year’s World Chess Cup (Fide World Chess Championships) in Khanty, Mansiyk, Russia, on Nov. 20 to Dec. 15.

The fourth-seed Torre (2560), Asia’s First GM, who is best remembered winning the 1982 Toluca, Mexico Inter-Zonal goes up against Srivachirawat Kannapon of Thailand (2256) using the white pieces on Board 4. Torre, the former Philippine Sportswriter Association (PSA) awardee lost to Hungarian GM Zoltan Ribli during their 1983 quarterfinal matchup in the Fide Cycle knockout tournament.

The 11th-seeded Paragua (2487) is aiming for another appearance in the World Cup tests the mettle of CM Nguyen Van Thanh of Vietnam (2173) on Board 11. Paragua, the 2003 Vietnam Southeast Asian Games’ most bemedalled athlete.
