Siteman starts chess program
Thursday, Sep. 17, 2009

For patients tired of being cancer’s pawn, the Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis is launching a chess program to help take their minds off the disease for a while.

Called “Chess for Life,” the program was inspired by Jim Corbett, a Siteman patient who was diagnosed with late-stage esophageal cancer in September 2007. During treatment, Corbett’s mood was lifted when he began playing chess. He died last December, but the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis decided to establish in program in tribute.

The program, which starts Oct. 9, will offer several components, including chess tables, instructions, a Web site for video games, and tournaments.
