Chess club at Escondido library checkmates inactivity

Nathan Summers couldn’t wait to teach his younger sister, Miranda, chess so he’d have someone to play. But now he’s not sure he did the right thing.

“I never knew it would evolve into something she could beat me (at),” he said.

Nathan, 9, and Miranda, 8, belong to the Knights Realm, a chess club that meets every Monday afternoon at the Escondido Public Library.

“She’s a good player,” Nathan said. “But sometimes she keeps doing weird stuff.”

Miranda said she likes the game because it makes her think.

“I like the neat checkmates I can discover,” she said.
