Kh1 and next Rg1.
Everybody knows that rooks are poor defenders. First I thought about f4-f5-f6 but this is too slow due to the threat Rf8 followed by f6. Therefore the other pawn must attack: 37.Qf6, blocking any defense moves, followed by h4-5-6. I do not see how the offside black forces should parry this.
@lantonov:
1.Qf6 a5 2.Rc1 Qa6 3.c6 and now the h-pawn attack.
White is just much better.
White plays 37.Kg1 with threat Nh7-ther is no need for Rg1 first- and I cannot see a reasonable defence.
Anon, you mean 37. Kh1?
@lantonov: ok I resign from my plan. Pawns are too slow. 1.Kh1 a5 2.Nh7 Rxh7 3.Rg1+ Rg7 4.Qxg7++
@Mousetrapper
Right, we reached an agreement about 1. Kh1. 1 … a5 is weak as it allows combination 2. Ne4 dxe4 3. Kf8 Qxg7+
Better 1… Re8
Sorry, once again
1. Kh1 a5 2. Ne4 dxe4 3.d5 Kf8 4.Qxg7+
1.Kh1 Re8 2.Rg1 and now if either Qb8 or a5, white plays 3.Rg3! and will play 4.Ne6! next.
If 2…Re6 is played to sacrifice the exchange back, then white is just obviously better after 3.NxR RxR+ 4.KxR pxN 5.Qxp+
let me rephrase since i found another loophole :p
1.Kh1 Re8 (otherwise 2.Nh7) 2.Rg8 a6 (if 2…Qb8 then 3.Rg3! is playable) 3.Nh7!
Now if 3…Re6 4.QxR mate
if 3… RxR+ 4.KxR white threatens Nf6 + and black will lose material.
Black is behind in material for the time being. Best I can see is kh1. frees up the knight from the pin and plans to introduce the rook on g1. While black is trying to untangle his position, queen knight and rook beat king and rook or king rook and rook. paper, sizzors, rock. I don’t see any forced continuations. This is purely a positional/strategic situation. I think there is a chance against a 2600 player.
OK, 1. Kh1 Re8 2. Rg1 (consensus) and now I think marginally best is 2…a5. Although it also loses after 3.Nh7 Rxg1+ 4.Kxg1 Re6 5.Qf8+ Kxh7 6.Qxf7+ Kh8 7.Qxe6 c6 8.e4
Mousetrapper you need to work your circle a little more !
1.Kh1 only move here with the idea of unpinning the Knight and leave away the g file for the rook.
No the treat is Nh7-f6-Qh8+ winning the rook.
Two defenses are possible:
a)giving back the exhange
b)moving the f7 pawn
a)1.Kh1 Rg5+ 2.Qg5 Kf8(forced)
b)pushing the pawn allow Ne6 and i dont look further ..
so a) seems critical.
1.Kh1 Rg5+ 2.Qg5+ Kf8 and now 3.f4 look strong with the idea of creating news treats on the king and winning the f7 pawn
for example:
Guillaume, I think you are right. 1… Rxg5 giving back material looks better to me than 1 …a5.
I mean better than 1…Re8
But now the stronger line is 1.Kh1 Rxg5 2.Qxg5 Kf8 3. Rg1 (instead of 3.f4) a5 4.Qg7+ Ke7 5.Rg5 Qa6 6.Re5+
Guillaume, I also agree with 1.-Rxg5 2.Qxg5 Kf8. But then, instead of 3.f4 (pawns are slow, I said before), 3.Rg1 bringing the rook into play. Can the King escape checkmate or not?
haha, lantonov, you had the same idea …
Yup, telepathy … 🙂
Good job all 🙂 Mousetrapper continue with your blog, i am an regular reader, i especially appreciate the middlegame position and i am going to publish some strategic position like that on my blog soon. unfortunaly in French but algebric notation is easy…
(R)ook—>(T)our
(Q)een—>(D)ame
(K)ing—>(R)oi… so Re5 in french is Ke5 not Rook e5 !
(K)night—>(C)avalier
In the diag i publish today it is black to move.. a blitz played today. have fun
!!!! cu soon
e4 will free bishop and win. . . I think
1. d5 Rxg5+ 2. Qxg5+ Kf8 3. Bg7+ Ke8 (3…Kg8 4. Bh6+ Kh8 5. Qg7#) 4. Qe5+ Kd8 5. Bf6+ Kd7 6. Qe7+ Kc8 7. Qd8#
I hope I avent missed anything – how did black manage to get his queen so stuck?
D.K.
ups there is a pawn on d5 … missed it 😀
D.K.
“But now the stronger line is 1.Kh1 Rxg5 2.Qxg5 Kf8 3. Rg1 (instead of 3.f4) a5 4.Qg7+ Ke7 5.Rg5 Qa6 6.Re5+”
hmmmmm… stronger than 3.rg1?! would be 3.qxd5 (potentially freeing the bishop!) i suppose.
i can not find any reasonable defense for black, against e.g
3…a5
4.qh5 ke7
5.qe5+ kd7
6.qf6 rf8
7.qf5+ kd8
8.d5 +-
but in my opinion 1…re8 is much stronger than 1…rxg5:
1…re8
2.rg1 qb8
(not 2…a5? 3.nh7 rxg1+ 4.kxg1 re6 5.qf8+ kxh7 6.qxf7+ kh8 7.qxe6)
3.rg3! f6
4.nh7 rxg3
5.fxg3 re7
6.nxf6+ kf7
7.nxd5+ +- and white is winning!
actually after 1.kh1 isnt nh7 a threat. there is no good defense as black that i can see.
Kf1 to remove the pin, and then e5 to start a pawn rush.
@JimMD
Black has some defence after 1.Kh1 Re8 (I agree, Vohaul) 2. Nh7? Re6 3. Nf6+ Rxf6 4.Qxf6 Qb8
@Pa Ingalls
1.e4 a5 followed by 2 …Qa6 and Black are better
@JakeDP
1.Kf1 is worse than 1.Kh1 because it leaves Ra1 stranded. A plan for Black is e.g. 1…a5 followed by 2…Qa6+
I think that 1.kh1, Rxg5+ is the best for black, but after 2.Qxg5+,Kf8;3.Qf6 and white has time to bring the rook g1,g3,h3.
The only chance for black would be 3.a6, but white Qf6 there’s also the treat to win the rook with Qh8.
As for 1.Kh1, Re8; I believe white has no need to move the knight and can go on with the same idea of 2.Rg1,g3 etc.
