Sengupta wins two titles in France

KOLKATA: Grandmaster Deep Sengupta had a very successful tour of France winning two tournaments and finishing seventh in the third.

Originally from Jharkhand, Sengupta, who trains at Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy here, won the first International chess festival at Vaujany in France played between July 10 and 18.

He emerged the champion by scoring 7.5 points out of nine games in a field which had nearly 100 players from 10 countries including six GMs and 10 IMs.

Sengupta’s next stop was Cannes where he won the Novotel Montfleury Trophy held from July 26 to August 1. There too he was the champion scoring seven points out of nine games in a field of 35 including four GMs, four IMs and two WGMs.

His form saw a dip in the third tournament, the 17 {+t} {+h} international Open held from August 2 to 8 at Nice, in which he finished seventh scoring 6.5 points out of nine games. The tournament had 100 players from 12 countries including four GMs and four IMs. — Special Correspondent
