Two critical rounds left to go at the U.S. Championship in St. Louis. Anything can still happen down the stretch.
Three former U.S. Champions (Kamsky, Nakamura, and Onischuk) and a young rising star (Hess) are leading the reigning champion (Shulman) and SPICE Cup co-champion (Akobian) by just half point.
Carlsen, Shirov and Wang are leading Mtel with a +1 score. Dominguez is solid as usual with 3 draws. Topalov once again is off to a slow start. Ivanchuk continues his cold streak and he is occupying the last position.
It’s Saturday Open Forum. What would you like to discuss? The forum is yours.
Has Magnus Carlsen caused a chess boom in Norway? Everyone throws around the word phenom but Carlsen seems like the real deal. He looks like an athlete. Does he participate in any other sports to stay in shape?
3 days ago there was Garri Kasparov in my country – Poland. He met with Lech Wałęsa – legendary leader of Solidarity in Poland, who won Nobel Peace Prize in 1983. Thanks to Wałęsa the communism fell down in Eastern Europe. Kasparov also formed the movement called Solidarity and they are fighting agaist Russian authorities (Putin, Medviedjev); they accused Putin of undermining democracy in Russia.
Do you think Kasparov’s Solidarity have chances for political success in such country like Russia?
I must say there is much sympathy for the US-championship here in good old Europe! The mix of current world stars, young talents and wellknown elder chessmen is just right. I like most Akopbian and hope he will do it despie of the little chance he got with – 0.5points just before the last two rounds. But every master else is okay, too.
okay from germany
Will Bill Goichberg be charged with bribery? Will Goichberg, Jim Berry and Randy Hough be forced to resign? The USCF is full of corrupt chess politicians. I hope you can help clean things up.
Akopbian? 😉
Akobian & Akopian
yes, they are both from armenia, and in their kind of script maybe it is the same name!
“Do you think Kasparov’s Solidarity have chances for political success in such country like Russia?”
Kasparov’s Solidarity is spelled: $-o-l-i-d-a-r-i-t-y. With a capital $.
“Akopbian? 😉
Akobian & Akopian”
That is one ugly baby!
Leontxo Garcia is supposed to be commentating on a big tournament in Europe – the World Computer Chess Championship I think.
Expect to find that it is between Rybka, Shredder, Junior and Hiarcs again with others putting up a good fight.
Is the machine chess the best chess now being played?
