This is the final Saturday Open Forum of 2009. Anand is preparing to defend the World Championship against Topalov. Magnus Carlsen will be the new official #1 player in the world in less than a week. Boris Gelfand, the most experienced player in the 128 player field, won the World Cup. Kramnik is back in top form this year and Aronian proves that he belongs in the top 5. It has been an exciting 2009.
It’s Saturday Open Forum. The forum is yours. What would you like to discuss?
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Nakamura proves that he’s the most talented player in the world.
I wish more of the top players competed in open swisses ie the general entry type swisses.
Wanting to know what Susan Polgar’s goals are (as a chessplayer) for 2010.
Carlsen is going to be a second of Anand for the match Anand – Topalov. That’s my topic for discussion 😉
That Carlsen won’t get a shot at the world title until 2011 is problematic. I don’t profess to know a solution, but anyone who is ranked #1 and is clearly at the peak of the chessworld deserves a title shot ASAP. The process is broken.
I think they should just use the FIDE rankings to determine the Chess World Champion.
Before the rankings and up to the minute internet reports people had an interest in who the best chess player in the world was. Back then, in the age of the steam ship, the Chess World Championship made sense. Now it is obsolete, a formality that just follows the rankings, usually.
I mean, who cares if Kramnik is the World Champion if he is rated number eight in the world? At least Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov were adamant about holding on to the title and the #1 ranking at the same time.
In the Fischer – Spassky match, Fischer rated about 100 points higher than Spassky. So, was there any doubt who the winner would be?
Certainly, the WCC adds drama and prestige to the sport, about the only time the regular media takes notice. But it was only Kramnik’s Toilet that really made headlines anyway. I suppose for sponsors dollars Chess needs to keep it. Also because the high level match strategy can be interesting too. And it give the participants a million dollar prize. Good for top players then.
However, the meaning of the WCC, I don’t know these days? With the live rating system we know that Carlsen is playing the best chess. Even if Anand wins the match, Carlsen is still the best chess player in the world today.
Susan, u never told me about this book: The Black Scholar Vol.38 no. 4 Barack Obama 2009 (cover) is this what they are running from Susan? I mean the Traditionalist? hehe. Im heading over to the Chessdrum now to see what crazy stuff going on there! Susan did they call Lazlo crazy? hehehe. ok, im sorry dont answer that, you dont have to respond the TOP GUYS are all kinds of quiet now! hehe. I tried to refrain from jokes but theses guys are too funny! hehehe. Yo Susan, OOOPSS! hahaha, Susan here go Kasparov ” i didnt touch that piece!” hehehehehe.”My ego hurt!” hahahaha.Ya see this is the problem with “the old chess”,Bobby. hehe. Oh i forgot im of African descent and therefore dont knuttin bout no CHEZZZ! hehe.
Disagrees with anon who said that system is broken just because Magnus can’t challenge for championship until 2011. He just (the key word there is JUST) became the number one rated player in the last few weeks of 2009. A couple of weeks with that ranking should not be enough to automatically get you into a title match which is not even official as of yet even though we know it is coming.
I was impressed with Spassky’s result in the match with Korchnoi.
Maybe he can take on Karpov next.
anon 5:37:00 PM CST….
Answer this: Which match would you like to see start tomorrow, Anand v. Carlsen or Anand v. Topalov?
“Oh i forgot im of African descent and therefore dont knuttin bout no CHEZZZ! hehe.”
Don’t worry Lionel, many chess players forget to bathe and are social outcasts.
An even exchange in my book.
“Answer this: Which match would you like to see start tomorrow, Anand v. Carlsen or Anand v. Topalov?”
Kasparov vs Carlsen would be the best match that can happen. Mentor vs Phenomenal Student, The Strongest Ever vs The Current Strongest. Give Kasparov 2 months to prepare and 1 Million dollars to play for, and he’ll be back to competitive form.
Funny thing is….Carlsen does not need the fide title to be #1
Why should he bother….serious..think about it.Carlsen does not need Fide. Fide needs him.

The ultamative match will be coming in 2011: Anand-Aronian.
okay
