Welcome to another session of my Saturday Open Forum. I will do my best to answer ASAP but there may be a little delay since Internet access is not so easy on the ship and the polar bears do not care much for the Internet. I am not a miracle worker 🙂
On the other hand, for those of you who are not on the Chess Moves Cruise, I will update you (almost daily) on all the exciting stuff that happen. Sometimes I feel like this is my little electronic diary 🙂
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Hi Susan. I always wanted to know which program or tool you use to make those diagrams.
Any of these can do the same: Fritz, Junior, Shredder, Tiger, ChessBase, etc.
Hi Susan.
Has there ever been anyone you really wanted to play but never got the chance? Did you ever play Mikhail Tal?
Yes, I wrote about my experience with Tal in my book Breaking Through. I played Fischer many times but I would like to play a Fischer Random match with him.
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar

When at your most active in tournaments, how many hours a week did you study? How did you divide your time between different methods of study?
6-8 hours daily + heavy fitness regiment.
Middlegame, tactics, endgames first and openings last.
Best wishes,

Hi Susan,
Does Sofia still play at all, even at just the club level in Israel?
Susan,
Thanks for the Open Forum.
Question:
A. If young Paul Morphy could “time travel” from the 1850’s to 2006 and if he devoted time to studying advances made in chess over the past 150 years…at what level do you feel his play now could be? Would he be a WC Candidate?
B. Top players such as Morphy and yourself have played simuls against far weaker competition. Can playing such simuls actually “weaken” your chess since you are not playing opponents of your own caliber?
Thanks.
Dear Susan,
I have a question about the post below…abou the all girls training.
How do you pick the girls? Do you tell them or do you send something to them?
I would love to be in that proggram. But I dont have the required rating. But you will use the Octobers rating list right? ok then i have some time to raise my rating up:)
Paul Morphy is a genius of his time. However, it is hard to compare to the players today. I would guess he would be at the top.
Simul does not help or hurt my chess 🙂
Maggie, the USCF supposed to let me know which player makes it. However, it is best if you send me an email directly. I really hope you can make it.
Best wishes,

In an earlier reply you stated you studied the middlegame, etc., approximately six to eight hours per day. Can you please go into more detail about how you approach studying the middlegame? Thanks,

By playing out critical positions against my coach or computer programs. I try to play for win from the side with the advantage and hold for draw on the worse side.

How many people signed up for the chess cruise?
It would have been nice if you could have spent more time in Seattle for chess promotion. American Foundation for Chess would have been interested.
