It’s Saturday Open Forum. Carlsen is leading Biel super tournament. The Montreal Empresa is more than half way done. Two major women’s tournaments (North Urals Cup and Women’s Grand Prix) are taking place simultaneously. The USCF Executive Board election is finally over.
What would you like to discuss? The forum is yours!
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
What plans does our new board have to help produce strong super GM’s in the USA?
What plans to assist our current strong GM’s such as Kamsky, Onishuk, Nakumara?
I don’t think this board is official yet. They have even met. I also don’t think Nakamura want any help. He said he trust no one as they’re all beneath him. I like to see support for Kamsky, Onischuk, Ibragimov, Shulman, Krush, Zatonskih, etc.
Congratulations to you, Paul, Jim and Randy!

I thought Nakamura got the Samford fellowship and that presumably helped him. He might not want help in the form of coaching (even though there are probably things he could learn from someone like Gulko) but financial support so he can devote his time to chess is always helpful.
Susan, Congratulations again on your election victory!
I would like to see you and the USCF establish a key objective to make chess more popular in the USA.
It seems to me that one step toward doing this would be to get the major newspapers in the 12 largest cities in the USA to carry a weekly chess column in their print and on-line versions.
Does anyone know how many of these cities have newspaper chess coverage now?
I’m excited about the future of the USCF. I hope 4 years is enough to turn things around. Congratulations and best of luck!
Mark
Congratulations on the election!! I wish you and the USCF the best, but please listen to Bauer and Berry on financial probelms!!
I’m happy the open forum is up and going now.:) I wanted to repost an earlier message of mine regarding the media reports of checkers being solved. Here it is for those interested:
Hi All,
Sorry to post on a different topic here but I do not know where else to place it and I think it will be of great interest to many. It is regarding the recent news about checkers being “solved.”
I have been keeping track of posts between the World Checker Champion and several top Checker GMs about this and there seems to be a bit of confusion on the media role.
So, for those who would like to follow a very interesting discussion (which also includes many analogies to Chess and Kramnik and Computer chess) here is the link which is part of the American Checker Federations web site…and for those who do not know the World Champion is Alexander Moiseyev.
http://usacheckers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1329&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
In essence, only one form of checkers has been solved. For those who know about the game, the only type that’s been “solved” is abbreviated as “GAYP” (or, “Go as you please”) which is only one form of draughts/checkers.
Why should this interest Chess fans? Well, AI and computers for o ne. Second, a lot of quality chess discussion go on in their forums.
So, with the many allusions to chess, I thought some folks here would want to check it out as I found it very interesting to hear from their world champion.
The world champ has posted some Emails between himself and Dr. Jonathan Shaifer and it appears that certain media outlets have printed slightly erroneous information.
Well, just thought that those interested in computers would take a look.
Thanks.
Hello Susan,
now that the election is over (congratulations btw.) you could deactivate the function of the blog that you must activate our posts first (I’m not quite sure about the correct english expression of “Beiträge freischalten” so I hope that is understandable).
Greetings
Jochen
HELP!!!!!
Can anyone please give me a good source for chess images, free to use, for our club website?
Thank you so much for your links!
Theo
Chess won’t ever be solved like that though, not in our lifetimes. Grandmaster checkers players and probably even lesser plays well-trained find it quite easy to force a draw from the opening in checkers. That’s why they usually have two moves already played out on the board that will not lead to an easy draw.
Congrats to winning the USCF election. Now…some hopes I have:
1. Allow Chess960 in USCF tournaments. This would increase interest in chess (my opinion).
2. Create online USCF chess server for playing. Players can maintain ratings and keep up in chess without travel. Cuts down costs to players for hotels, etc.
3. Drop Chess Life magazine. Not necessary anymore. Encourage people to sign up to Chesspublishing.com for REAL chess coverage of opening lines, etc. (My opinion).
Theo,
Go to http://www.alltheweb.com
do a search with the keyword – chess clipart
good luck
Susan, thank you very much!
Thx a lot, Victor!
That link has good images! 🙂
But are you sure we won’t get into copyright trouble?! Can we use the images just like that!? 😮
greets,
Theo
a) suspend the USCF forums, they are full of bitterness and dissent.
b) suspend the ED (transfer to a functional position) for 12 months while you take over direct management to set things right.
c) accept a sponsorship deal that will allow Nakamura and 2-3 others to receive a salary of $100K per year to play chess – renewable if their elo increases at least 10 point sper year average.
d) initiate impartial audit to discover any criminal wrongdoing of any previous board member.
e) revise the rules so that only honest non-criminals can stand for election for USCF.
