Is Magnus Carlsen the new Garry Kasparov?
Is it too early to tell?
Personally, I strongly suspect that he is the new GK.
Richard,
England.
having played him i believe that fcould be the case , congrats susan im proud of you you have my support eric moskow leaving tommorrow to peru to chase that norm see ya.
Do you know when the meeting of the EB will take place for the vote for President.
Please do not refer to Magnus as a new Garry Kasparov. He does not have Garry’s personality which was not really the best for chess. I expect Magnus will be a much better anbassador for chess.
good luck eric. Hope you make a norm in Peru.
anonymous (5:58), are you referring to GK’s monstrous ego and his tendency to publicly belittle his opponents?
Also, young Magnus doesn’t seem the kind of player to cheat (let’s not forget that notorious game, a few years ago, when Judit was the victim of GK’s cheating (and the rather incompetent arbiter.))
Richard,
England.
I saw one post about pocket chess yesterday ( or before ) in this blog. I would like to share with the people this link http://www.grailmaster.com/misc/chess/comp/chessrev/chessreview.html
where we can find a very interesting, extensive and useful article about pocket chess, for palm or pocket pc. It was written by Axel Schumaccher. He talk about dozens of programs for pocket chess that we can find today. I found this article for luck once, and it was very useful for me when I was looking for a good pocket chess program some months ago.
If someone is interested , there it is.
Susan,
Congratulations on being elected to the USCF board. I believe that having you and Paul on the board will help the USCF to become successful.
There was poor coverage on the USCF Web site of the Denker and Polgar tournaments. My nephew played in the Denker, and I sometimes couldn’t find the results of his games until days later. With you now on the board, can you get the USCF to provide better coverage of these tournaments next year? Maybe even some national TV coverage of the final. They put the national spelling bee on TV, why not the final day of the Denker chess tournament? I would think some cable network would be interested. It would really help promote scholastic chess.
Thanks,
Tom D
The posting of results for the Denker, Polgar and US Open were very poorly done this year.
Most major tournanments dedicate a website (or webpage) to posting pairings and results for people to access.
I am saddened by the fact that The Polgar will not be a part of the US Open next year. Competing with their male counterparts and some of the finest our country has to offer will be missed opportunities and experiences for our your ladies.
That said, I am happy for Texas Tech and expect the Knight Raiders to quickly move into the top ten, top five and eventually compete for the top three spots at the Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championships.
Congratulations Susan and Paul! Keep up the great work.
Can you please arrange an ingterview with Magnus Carlsen?
He just won a major tournament, but no interviews are available!! 🙁
Why not do a cover story about Carlsen in Chess Life? He has had an incredible year. I saw him interviewed on tv and he was quite articulate (not to mention a cutie).
Susan, I wonder if you could make a quick mention concerning Kasparov cheating against Judit. I know this is very old news but ultimatley I think she made the right decision. Had the arbiter ruled in GK’s favor it would have done the chess world a huge disservice. How was your sister post match? Also if anyone has any links to video of the event I would love to see it. -Cheers
The link that I wrote above actually is
http://www.grailmaster.com/misc/chess/comp/chessrev/chessreview.html
The attraction of The Susan Polgar National Invitational has been enhanced by being in partnership with the US Open and the Denker. It is nice of Texas Tech to agree to host the Invitational, but it will lose its flavor not being with the Open and the Denker.
I also was disappointed by the lack of coverage of those tournaments this year. It did pick up in the later rounds after many comments.
Good luck with your new assignment. Just don’t throw out some of the popular attractions in any changes made.
This is crazy. I cant copy and paste the entire link here. Susan, sorry, about that.
My last try, typing character by character:

Yes, and even more. Garry was a bit rough on chess. He was very selfish and very big ego as you say. I finally was turned off by Garry.
Anand and Kramnik seem to be much better as representatives than was Gary.
So far Magnus seems like a very nice person. He likes to joke around in interviews. Will even poke a few jokes at himself.
Right now I am a Magnus fan although I support the American players more. For example I wanted Onischuk to win over Magnus in the playoffs.
I just do not have the hero worship for Kasparov and Karpov. I always liked Anand. A real gentleman and very honest in his dealings. Kramnik earned my respect in Elista. Topalov lost my respect down there.
Right now Nakamura and Finegold are battling it out. Finegold has white and so far is holding his own. I enjoy all the discussion on ICC during the game. Makes watching chess interesting. I also run an engine while watching. Keeps me busy and mostly out of trouble.
Susan:
Is there anyway in the future there will be more money/scholarships awarded to the prestigious Denker tournament winners. This past weekend a friend of mine told me this..
Polgar prize fund- $62,000 without scholarships included
Denker prize fund- A scholarship to the winner maybe?
Also the quality of the games is higher in the Denker, with players having much higher ratings. If the top polgar played in Denker I would not place bets on her, no offence.
So to get to my point: In the future will there be more money set aside to Denker?
Sincerley, A highschool chess expert, that has lost interest in the denker, and might commit a sex change so he can win the polgar easily.
Magnus has his own chess blog where his father write up a bit and fans can post. The Magnus fan who wants news can always try here.
http://blog.magnuschess.com/index.html
He has only had it a short while. I am sure it will improve over time.
Hey turba, when using long URL’s you may want to consider using tinyurl.com. It shortens the URL and prevents it from being broken…I have created the following link for you:

Too Funny.

The money and scholarships were offered to the boys by Susan. However the politics at USCF is to oppose Susan on everything so they opposed the prizes for the boys and refused to accept them. Get rid of the old politicians and the boys will get the prizes. Susan will raise the prizes and scholarships.
I had to spend a long time reading posts on the USCF Forums to realize how super bad the people down there really are. The only solution to the problem is to vote them all out and for Susan to find good people for all 7 of the EB positions. Then we will have a really good USCF.
There is an election every 2 years. So in just 2 years we get the opportunity to vote in 4 good new EB members. Make sure you and everyone votes next time.
The present people in power always seem to oppose prizes for the players. It seems to be run by Organizers and Tournament Directors who want everything for themselves. Just keep posted to Susan’s Blog over the next 2 years and you will see the corruption at the USCF.
grrrr…
Forgot to include the tiny.url which is http://tinyurl.com/jcm6w.
I suppose you can use long URL’s and encapsulate them in html tags. For a quick html quick list go to html.
The idolizing of Carlsen is disturbing and even stupid.
What if he doesn’t become the new
GK or VK and “only” a very good chess players among other very good chess players ?
Then the worshippers will say : he didn’t fulfill the expectations !!
They will very easily drop him for
the next overhyped wonder kid.
Karjakin is as good as Carlsen, but as a Ukrainian (commercially less attractive)he gets much less invitations for super tournaments.
Following the “wonder child logic”,
Ponomariov (WC at 18) should now be the new GK, which he isn’t.
Some get a very early start, others peak later.
Carlsen could become the new “king”,it’s possible he will rule for a short or a longer period,
but right now it’s senseless speculation to tell such things.
I’m convinced it does him more harm than good.

Yes, I got now. Thx for the tip.
The strong Fruit chess engine has been released for free it seems. It includes the 2.2, 2.3 and a beta version. There are releases not only for Windows but also for Linux and Mac.

The comeback of the summe should be a theme here.
I dont talk about Evander Holyfield.
But about van Wely in rd. 8 + 9 in Biel.
Sure, in the end he share place 10.
Nevertheless “I got” convinced again he is a fighter. Has deserved invitation to other big events again.
yeah!
what do you think!?
greetings

Dortmund
Good luck Eric! I’m confident you’ll make it within a year!
Best wishes,
Susan
The meeting and the voting process will take place tomorrow night.
Tom D., thanks for the kind words and we hope to make many changes for the better. The problem is we still only have 2 votes. But we will work on these areas.
jbflores, we asked the USCF to give the Polgar and Denker players a discount to play at the US Open. They refused even though the tournament benefits from all the room nights taken by the 100 kids and their families. We have to put the best interest of the kids first. 20+ girls could not play this year even though they qualified because their families can’t afford it.
I offered the same to the Denker and it was turned down. In fact, our sponsors were insulted by various chess politians. It is unfortunate that some people put politics before the best interest of the kids.
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar
Any comment on our teams playing the Chess Olympiad for youngsters?
I agree with the other posters that the Polgar should be held with US Open. For strong A and expert players, the opportunity to play in the much stronger US Open competition is a strong incentive for them to participate in the Polgar. Given the strength of players in the current Polgar (median rating of 1500), I am not sure if the stronger players will make the trip for the Polgar only event. The prizes and sponsorships are attractive but stronger players may decide to attend other more challenging tournaments instead. I also believe the US Open tournament benefits from having younger Denkar and Polgar players in the past few years. Many Polgar players also play in the US Open and probably gain a lot of experience playing in US Open.
I forgot to say that at the end of the article for pocket chess that I mencioned here we find 3 other links to related article in pdf format, html and .doc, which we can save in the HD, where the author describes 63 pocket chess programs, one by one, creating a rank of the best programs.
Actually this is the body of the article. The first link that I wrote above is just the introduction.
The link is:
http://tinyurl.com/35c7qh for pdf format.
How will the cost be less to attend the Polgar next year? Families that enjoy chess will not have the opportunity to play in the Open or side events. You may lose participants this way as well.
In what sense is this a forum?
Anon (Monday, August 06, 2007 6:20:00 AM)
It is a blog. Click on link for Wikipedia’s definition of blog.
Exactly my point – it isn’t set up as a forum, hence very limited discussion of anything. Not meant as a criticism, but there is a difference and it should be too difficult to add a forum to this (otherwise excellent) blog.
