It’s Saturday Open Forum. What would you like to discuss?
The world championship in 10 days or so? The major International Chess Conference in Aberdeen, Scotland? The NH event where the Rising Stars are battling the Legends? The Chinese defeating the Russians by 5 points? The FIDE ruling about Short, Topalov and Danailov?
The forum is yours.
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Ljubomir Ljubojevic is defending like a lion against young Cheparinov at the NH Chess Tournament.
I think this kind of idea- unusual tournament proved that it can be very successful. Personally I find myself drawn to watch the games for hours.
I would even offer Kasparov to participate in a similar event on the side of the veterans. This will cause a lot of public attention. What do you think about this idea?
POKER has already superceeded chess in terms of TV time. Look out!!! NOW POKER COULD REPLACE CHESS IN THE SCHOOLS!
A Harvard law professor is suggesting that poker (Texas Hold’em) was a great game to teach kids in the schools! The chess scholastic community better get its act together or poker will push chess out of the schools. This was a subject of one of the newsbits on NPRs weekend edition. It will be in the NPR archieves (aired today) I am sure. We need chess promoter out there to respond to this as soon as possible. Jerry Nash of the USCF is the logical choice to respond but also the College Chess folks.

Susan, you should delete all posts by Lafferty. This $@%#! should not be allowed to spam here.
Chess Freak, let’s not insult anyone here. However, he is banned from my forum for a number of reasons.
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar

Hi Susan. I’m looking to purchase a hand-held chess computer. Which one, or brand do you recommend? I plan on sparing no expense. Thanks for your time.
bobby has travel restrictions I am told otherwise it would surely work?????? eric
If Lafferty wants my respect, shut up for 10 years. His knowledge of chess is equal to a 5 year old child but he has an opinion about everything. Anyone who supports and responds to Sloan doesn’t deserve respect. He’s just another troll in my book. He’s single handedly ruined the USCF issues forum.
Guys! Why are we talking about Lafferty? He’s another nobody like Sloan. Why are you wasting time with them? Aren’t they the only 2 who are banned from this forum?
I think FIDE was far too lenient on Topalov. Even the warning was a threat that he could be banned for one year when the rules say 3 years.
The ruling was very weak and I felt as I was reading it that Danailov and Topalov had an agreement with FIDE long before the ruling was declared. Politics as usual.
This was the perfect time to set a precedence and sent a message to chess players and the world. Fide failed the test.
POKER must not be taught in schools. Gambling is not appropriate to teach children. We need to instill a good work ethic not a gambling attitude. The idea of gambling that can be taught is how one always loses in gambling. Mathematics can teach that well. Teach a few good mathematical problems showing the player always going broke and fewer people might gamble.
Gambling addiction can be worse than drugs and alcohol on a family. It keeps everyone always broke. It devestates family life.
The idea of teaching poker to children is terrible.
Hi, susan : new free play chess web side : http://www.chesscube.com

Are these people mentioning Lafferty and Sloan – actually Lafferty and/or Sloan?
We presumably don’t even want to mention them, so why do so?
Fischer can of course not even leave Iceland or he will risk being arrested. There is an outstanding warrant out for his arrest by the US government for violating a trade embargo that he broke when he played Spassky in that rematch in the former Yugoslavia.

Eric. How about inviting one of the Icelandic GMs? At least there will not be a language problem (lol – their English is typically pretty darn good but my Icelandic is better).
Sincerely,
Dr. Karlsson
The question “Who has realised their chess scholarship by going to the relevant college?” was answered by victor in last week’s Open Forum.
The answer is Victoria Bailey who had a choice of two scholarships, and went to Texas A&M rather than TTU.
victor also mentioned that Jesse James Lozano chose to go to UTB/TSC rather than Texas A&M.
I look forward to news of the other 12 recipients mentioned on this blog. Many are probably not ready to go to college yet:
Ananya Roy, Roxana Ortiz,
Magdalena Matyszewska, Luciana Morales,
Luciana Morales, Laura Morales Mendoza,
Janice Chen, Rebecca Lelko,
Sylvia Yang, Louiza Livschitz,
Eunice Rodriguez, Julia Kerr,
Warren Harper
An interesting list of chess talent.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZABeQ5vkpXM – extraordinary!
Is this typical of our kids?
If so, they need to see a globe of the earth or an atlas before they learn how to move a Knight.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYTz1PVh06U&NR=1 is another classic.
Still, both kids have scrubbed up and have nice smiles.
I really am going to have to get a DVD of ‘Smile’ (1975) – lashings of American applie pie if that’s your thing.
