The Chess Tournament Magistral Casino de Barcelona 2012 was held on 23-31st October at the Casino of Barcelona (Marina Avenue, 19-21) as a ten-player round robin.
The Tournament was organized by the Catalonian Chess Federation and sponsored by the Casino of Barcelona (Group Peralada), Barcelona City Hall and and the Autonomous Government of Catalonia.
A couple of days before the start of the event, the last year Magistral winner Ivan Salgado Lopez and winner of the 2012 Catalan chess circuit Emilio Cordova were substituted by the legendary GM Predrag Nikolic and Georgian GM Levan Aroshidze.
The 19-years old Russian hope Sanan Sjugirov, presently ranked as 10th on the World Junior List, had a fantastic run to convincingly take a clear first place with 7/9 points, leaving the 2nd-placed GM Yuniesky Quesada a full point behind.
