Odessa’s Sam Capocyan, 8, a third-grader at Austin Montessori School is now a state chess champion.
He took the Primary Championship Division’s First-Place trophy on Sunday at the 2009 Texas Scholastic State Chess Tournament in McAllen. Capocyan’s division was for the highest ranked players between the ages of kindergarten and third grade.
Capocyan completed the championship round of the tournament with six wins and one draw.
Capocyan’s father, local family physician Dr. Owen Capocyan, said his son’s trophy is taller than the boy.
