1. R:g7 R:g7
2. Rf7 Reg8 (checking accomplishes nothing)
3. R:g7 R:g7
4. d8=Q+
OR
3. d8=Q also works
If:
2 … Qg3
3 Rf8+
Rg7 Rg7
Rf7 wins
check check promote check mate
1. Rxg7 Rxg7
2. Rf7 Reg8
3. e8(Q)
1-0
1. Rxg7, threatening
2. Rf7+ Rg7
3. Qxg7#
1. … Rxg7
2. Rf7, threatening
3. Qxg7#
2. … R8g8
3. Rxg7, threatening
4. Rf7+ Rg7
5. Qxg7#
3. … Rxg7
4. e8=Q+ Qf8
5. Qxf8#
2. … Qc1+
3. Kh2 Qh6
4. Rf8+ Rxf8
5. exf8=Q#
Previous suggestion doesn’t work, as Black queen control promotion square. Perhaps 1. Rxg7 Rxg7 2. Rf7 win. To avoid mate, Black has to sacrifice some material.
1. R:g7 R:g7 2. Rf7 and black is toast with the mate threat on g7 and the f8 queening square to defend.
2… Q:e7 fails to the mate threat
2… Qc1+ 3. Kh2 Qh6 fails to 4. Rf8+
2… Reg8 3. e8Q Qc1+ 4. Kh2 Qh6 5. Q:g8+ K:g8 6. Qe8# is about as long as I think black can live.
1) Rxg7 Rxg7
2) Rf7 Reg8
3) e8=Q followed by
4) Qxg7 #
I think white shall not give check till move 4, black may check before that.
But black’s g-pawn is fatally weak.
1. Rxg7! Rxg7 (otherwise black looses queen to discovered check!)
2. Rff7!! (of course not Rf8+?) Qc1+ (alternative below)
3. Kh2 Qh6 (Reg8 see below)
4. Rf8+! (f8 no more covered by queen) Rxf8
5. exf8=Q#
2. … Reg8
3. e8=Q!
The new born queen is taboo and with the double threat Qxg8 Kxg8 Qxg7# and Qxg8 Kxg8 Qe8#.
Black queen may cover g7 as above, but not e8.
Mate follows very soon.
@Andrew: check check promote check mate? You better check again!
I’d say: capture capture move and no matter what checkmate will follow soon.
This is another good one!
1. Rxg7!! Rxg7
(anything else leads to a quick checkmate)
2. Rf7!!! Qc1+
3. Kh1 1-0
(No way to stop the checkmate)
Cool.
Maybe
1. Rxg7 Rxg7
2. Rf7 Rg8
3. Qxg7+ Rxg7
4. e8=Q+ Rg8
5. Qe5+ Rg7
6. Qxg7#
is a bit more forcing.
