MANILA, Philippines – John Paul Gomez became the ninth Filipino Grandmaster after he forced Viktor Laznicka of the Czech Republic to a draw in the ninth round of the 38th World Chess Olympiad Saturday in Dresden, Germany.
Gomez, 22, earned an ELO rating of 2606, enough to give him one of the most prestigious titles in all of sports.
His feat was dampened, however, by the country’s 2.5-1.5 loss to the Czechs. – GMANews.TV
