Rombaldoni downs Salgado to keep lead

CHENNAI: India’s Swayams Mishra, V A V Rajesh, Girish Koushik & Stany upset higher-rated Grandmasters in the fifth round of the SDAT-RAMCO 50th World Junior & 29th Junior Girls Chess Championships here on Saturday.

Overnight leader, Italian IM Axel Rombaldoni beat third seed Ivan Salgado Lopez from Spain to record his fifth straight win. Following the leader half a point behind was IM Kacper Piorun of Poland.

In the girls section, Russian Olga Girya maintained her lead with five points after putting it across top seed and WGM Nazi Paikidze of Georgia. The big Indian hope WGM Padmini Rout went down to Romanian Irina Bulmaga on the third board. Also ending on the losing side were Bhakti Kulkarni, P V Nandhidhaa and Pon N Krithika in the top 10 boards.

Swayams Mishra, a student of KIIT University from Bhubaneswar, emerged triumphant against GM Sasa Martinovic of Croatia in a Benoni game.

Karnataka lads Koushik and Stany, along with Chennai’s Rajesh put it across (accomplished GMs) Vasif Durarbeyli , Gyula Pap & Salem A R Saleh respectively. Girish, Stany and Swayams moved to shared third spot with four points, while Rajesh stays further half a point behind on 3.5 points. Sahaj Grover had a bad day in office losing to Piorun.
