Here is a picture of Fred (sitting across me) and others from Brownsville visiting my chess center in Forest Hills, NY a few years ago
I am sad to announce the passing of two chess friends, Steve Herx and Fred Buitron. Steve was a chess player, coach, and was at one time worked with Chess in the Schools in NY City. Fred was a chess coach in Brownsville, TX. I first met Fred at one of the national scholastic events. He came up to me and asked if I could come down to Brownsville to help promote chess to young players in this city.
Both loved chess and the kids they worked with. RIP Steve and Fred. You will be missed.
Wow! RIP Fred. Thanks for everything you did for the kids in Brownsville.
Rest chess superhero, rest.
Ask Bobby F. for queen odds…
Wow, I am still in disbelief that one of Brownsville Chess Coach Pioneers is no longer with us. Fred you will be dearly missed, for you touched so many lives. You made a difference in the world of chess in Brownsville.
“For What you do unto a child, you do unto me” say it the LORD.
Rest in Peace my Dear Friend. May You be seated in Heaven next to Jesus Christ Himself. You so deserve your place in the kingdom of Heaven, with Jeuse Christ Our Lord. Amen.
P.S. Have fun teaching the Angels to play chess.

Fred Buitron was my dad… I will miss him, and have been crying since I heard the news. Thank you for this website.. I will pass it to my brother…
Thank you so much for letting others know…Fred Buitron was my oldest brother it is sad that I have lost 2 brothers in the last 4 years. He was a man with a BIG heart and loved his family tremendously and cared greatly about those he taught whether it was in chess, school, driving, or military. I will MISS him but his SMILE will remain in MY heart FOREVER…HE was a good man. I know he will be watching me from Heaven. I love YOU, Big Bro.
Fred – (Mr B. as many of his players and friends called him) will be missed.
I am personnally very grateful for all he did for many kids and all his contributions to Chess in Brownsville. My son feels a great deal of gratitude for all he did and I am very thankful Mr. B introduced him to the game and helped him learn in a team environment. He was his first coach.
RIP Mr B
