Harini emerges champion

CHENNAI: S. Harini defended her title in the 27th Rachel Paranjothy open chess tournament for women, sponsored by Ramco, here on Friday.

The second place went to National under-13 girls’ champion J. Saranya while V. Janu finished third.

World champion Viswanathan Anand, who was the chief guest, praised Ethiraj College for organising the tournament for 27 long years.

Also present during the function were Dr. Mrs. M. Thavamani, Principal, Ethiraj College, Dr. A.M. Swaminathan, Chairman, Ethiraj College, and D.V. Sundar, Secretary, All India Chess Federation.

Final standings: 1. S. Harini (SRM Arts and Science) 7; 2. J. Saranya (Velammal) 6.5; 3-6 V. Janu (Velammal), Srija Seshadri (Jawahar Vidyalaya, Neyveli), G.K. Monnisha (Velammal) and G. Aarthi (G.K. Shetty) 6 each; 7-13 G. Apurva (Vaishnav, Chromepet), B. Jeyassri, Michelle Catherina (Good Shepherd), V. Varshini, M. Mahalakshmi (both Velammal), B. Arthi (Sethu Baskara) and K.S. Divyalakshmi 5.5 each; 14-19 U. Ashwini (Church Park), R. Dharanisree (Chettinad Vidyashram), J.G. Nevedhitha (Everwin), D. Trishla, T. Rajeswari and M. Padmashree 5 each.
