Chess champion for 2nd consecutive year
Die Republikein, Namibia

THE chess students of The Weekend Chess Academy battled it out in the TWCA’s annual chess tournament last weekend. This event benchmarked the second successful year for the Academy and its students. Only ten of the 32 registered students participated in the event, as the rest have already left for the holidays.

It was Christo Retief, a 2nd year student, who took gold for the second time by winning 6 out of his 7 matches and earning a progressive score of 25 points. Although Romano Coetzee also won 6 of his 7 matches, his progressive score of 24, cost him the second place and he had to settle for silver, also for his second year.

Jack Tjaronda earned a bronze medal by winning 5 out of his 7 matches. Earlier this year Christo, Julian, Chez-Ray and Mitch led the TWCA A team in the National School Teams Chess Championships, where Christo scored 7 out of 7 points. Christo loves chess, is very talented and works hard at his chess.

His hard work and dedication speak for themselves and Christo most certainly is destined to become a national chess champion soon. He even scored a few games against his coach this year. This was not the only event in which the TWCA students shone.

The students were also awarded with Chess Certificates in Course I (beginners) and Course II (advanced) for passing the TWCA’s final tests. In this theoretical part for Advanced Course, Christo Retief once again claimed first place for the second time, Romano Coetzee in second, Mitch Nitzborn in third and Deidre Plaatjes in fourth.

In the Beginners Course (I) two students passed with 100%, namely Kangwa Chakanga and Jack Tjaronda. Other top performers were Revelino Geiseb, William Kamberipa, Tjitjiri Tjaronda who were joined for second place, Xenophone Julius was third, Abigail Julius was fourth, Nicola Tjaronda was fifth and Vetueza Tjaronda was sixth.
