Campion claim record seventh chess title

CAMPION College claimed a record seventh hold on the National Schools Chess Championship title, after winning a nail-biting blitz play-off against Rural Area champions Glenmuir High in the all-island final at Kingston College last Saturday.

Glenmuir took the lead after the first two games ended during regulation play, when captain Noel Brown defeated Campion’s Andrew Folkes on Board 2 and Andre Nelson held Campion’s Sekani Boxill to a draw on Board 4.

Needing to claim at least 1.5 points from the other two games to keep themselves in the match, Campion did just that, when captain Philip Pryce defeated Tahj Davis on Board 3 and Campion’s Douglas Johnson secured a draw against Andrew Ellis on Board 1.

With the regulation match ended in a 2-2 tie, it was left to the top two speedchess players from each team, Glenmuir’s Noel Brown and Campion’s Phillip Pryce, to break the deadlock in a best-of-six blitz match, where each player would be allowed only five minutes to finish each game.
