1… Bxd4
0-1
I think this is not only from last year, but was also posted on this blog as a puzzle. It certainly seems familiar to me.
1. …..Bd4
2. Bd4 Qc1
3. Ka2 Ra8 followed by mate.
Alternatives for white are no better
1. …..Bd4
2. Qd4 Qc2
3. Ka1 Ra8
4. Ba3 Ra3#
Or
1. …..Bd4
2. Qc4 Be4
3. Ne4 Qe4
4. Qc2 Rc2 winning.
i like … Bxd4
white can’t play Qxd4 as it allows … Qc2
also unplayable: Bxd4 Qc1
in both lines black’s follow-up … Ra8 is pretty harsh
looks like white wants to play Nc4 to block up the position. if he does that to avoid above line:
1 … Bxd4
2 Nc4
black wins by taking the pawn the knight had been protecting:
3 … Bxe4
skewering the queen and king
1… Bxd4
e.g.,
2. Qxd4 Qc2+
3. Ka1/a2 Ra8+
or
2. Bxd4 Qc1+
3. Ka2 Ra8+
if white does not take on d4, the threat is … Bxb2 and … Qc1+
2. Nc4 loses to Bxe4
if 2. Rh1 (guarding c1)
3. Bxb2 Kxb2
4. Qc3+ Qxc3
5. bxc3+
wins the knight
It looks like 1. … Bxd4! upon which the bishop is untouchable due to the threat of Qc1+ or Qc2+ followed by Ra8+. But if White does not capture the bishop, there is the threat of Bxb2 followed by Qc3+, winning White’s knight, in which case Black would be winning outright.
1. …Bxd4 wins no matter what white response is, whether Q takes or Bishop takes, black wins.
