Anand lauds Assam

Guwahati, Jan. 14: Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand today predicted a bright future for chess players in Assam in particular and the Northeast in general.
Visiting the city for the second time as part of his joint venture with the NIIT Mind Champions Academy, Anand today said he has observed a rapid improvement in the standard of chess.
“Each time I have visited the city and observed players from the state, it appears the children here are growing stronger and stronger. Assam seems to be on the right track and I will be happy to see Grandmasters from the state very soon,” the icon said.
He participated in simultaneous games against 10 winners of the East Zone Chess Masters Tournament here today and observed that it was a “tougher fight this time” compared to his earlier visit to the city. He had played a simultaneous game with 25 players at Don Bosco School two years ago.
He was here today for the prize distribution ceremony of the Chess Masters East Zone tournament. Tosen Mongwang of Joypore Higher Secondary School, Dibrugarh and Aditya Chakraborty of Delhi Public School, Ruby Park, Calcutta, emerged the government schools and private schools champions respectively.
As chief guest, the director of the IIT Guwahati, Gautam Baruah, appreciated the efforts of the NIIT and Anand in grooming talent through a computerisation scheme in schools.
The tournament is played among students of schools, where NIIT Mind Champions Academy clubs are formed and there is provision for participation over the Internet.
