International Master Rahul Sangma of Delhi became the first player from outside Tamil Nadu to win the 10th Adyar Times FIDE-rated Open chess tournament which concluded here on Friday.

Sangma, 21, who won the fourth rating tournament title of his career said this was the second best after the success at Kota. “The lower-rated players were playing much stronger in Chennai,” observed Sangma.

Sangma, who hails from Chhapra in Bihar and is now settled in Delhi, played a 40-move fighting draw with white. In a rook ending he drew with J. Ramakrishna of Hyderabad to finish unbeaten on 7.5 points from nine games. Karnataka’s third seed, Stany proved that when pawns on the board are immobile two knights are not inferior to two bishops and defeated Navin Kanna of Chennai in 33 moves to tie for the first place on 7.5 points.

Sangma’s better tie-break score helped him lift the trophy and the Rs. 25,000 cash prize.

Cash prizes totalling Rs. 1.2 lakh were distributed by S.P. Ambrose, IAS Retd., Managing Editor of Adyar Times.

Chennai schoolgirl Bala Kannamma surprised everyone by tying for the third to 10th places and defeating the third seed Stany early in the tournament.
