Qxc3 could do most harm to white
White’s weakness on first rank invites to some sacking attack, we can see that Nc3 alone defends Rxd1 mating. Natural is to try:
1. Qxc3! Rxd8+ (could not retake on c3)
2. Rxd8
It still threats Rd1 mating, still not possible to retake on c3, and white queen hangs.
2. … Qc1 (Qe2 Qxb2)
3. Qd4
White is up with a piece and has continuous attack.
1. … Qxf3
2. Rxd8+ Rxd8
3. gxf3 Rd1+
4. Rf1 Rxf1+
5. Qg1 Rxg1+
6. Kxg1
now all the pieces are off the board, except for the black bishop. should be an easy win.
greets, jan
This is a nice problem. I don’t like horsies. Kick it.
Qc3 almost plays itself because of the weak looking back rank. The only doubt comes from white playing 2.Rxd8+, but on the recapture, black again threatens Rd1 which will recover the queen:
1. …..Qc3
2. Rd8 Rd8
3. bc3 Rd1
4. Rf1 Rf1
5. Qg1 Rg1
6. Kg1 and white has avoided the mate on the back rank, but at the cost of the knight.
The only other relevant line I can see is 2.Rfd2, but then black plays Rxd2 with the same result.
Eating a horse is much more fun that kicking one. Chomp!!
1. … Qxc3 2. Rxd8+ Rxd8 3. bxc3 Rd1+ 4. Rf1 Rxf1+ 5. Qg1 Rxg1+ 6. Kxg1
1…Qxc3 to exploit White’s weak back rank.
If 2.Rd8+ Rd8 (still threatens back rank.
3.bc Rd1+
4.Rf1 Rf1+
5.Qg1 Rg1+
6.Kg1 and Black keeps the extra piece with a winning endgame.
1… Qxc3, threatening mate with Rxd1
