A quick look would indicate this probably arose out of a Tarrasch, and that 1. Nxc6! is a quick win of the exchange due to the two bishops and the poorly placed c8 rook. 1… Rxc6 2. Bb5 1 … bxc 2. Ba6 and if 2. … Ra8 3. Bb7.
Nxc6 bxc6
Ba6 Ra8
Bb7
Nxc6 Rxc6
Bb5
1. Nxc6
Nc6!?
Nxc6 followed by Ba6 or Bb5
1. Nxc6 wins an exchange.
1. -, Rxc6 2. Bb5 is easy to find and after 1. -, bxc6 follows 2. Ba6! Ra8 3. Bb7.
As exercise that was easy for me but I do not think I would have found that if nobody told me that there was something to find.
Greetings
Jochen
I had to use a computer with this one. I was stuck on the king side.
