1….. Ne5
2.Nh4
(2.exd4 Nf3+ 3.Kh1 Qxg3 followed by 4… Qh2# or 4… Qg1#)
(2.Ne1 Rd2+ 3.Kh1 Rxc2 4.Nxc2 Qd1+ 5.Kg2 Qe2+ 6.Kg1 Nf3+ 7.Kh1 Qh2#)
2….. Rd2+
3.Rxd2 Qxd2+
4.Kh1 Qe1+
5.Kg2 Nf3
6.Nxf3 exf3+
7.Kxf3 Qf1+
8.Kg4 Qf5+
9.Kh4 Qg5#
1………Ne5!!! Wins
>A-2..exd4?.Nf3+!!.3.Kh1.Qxg3!.threatening mate at h2 and if N moves to allow R to cover h2 then Mate at g1. White cannot parry both threats!. Hence 4…..Qh2/g1#!!
>B-2-Nf4.Rd2+.3.Rxd2.Qxd2+.
>>B1-4.Ng2.Nf6+.5.Kh1.Qd1+.6.Ne1.Qxe1+. 7.Kg/h2.Qg1#!
>>B2-4.Kh1.Nf3!.5.Ng2.Qd1+ transposes to B1!
>>B3-4.Kg1.Nf3+.5.Kf1.Qe1+.6.Kg2.Qg1#!
>C-2.Rf2.Rd2!.3.Kg1.Nf3+!.4.Rxf3.exf3!.5.Nf4.Rg2+!!. 6.Nxg2.Qd1+!.7.Kf/h2.Qe2+/Qe2. And mate next move 8….Qxg2!!
Other moves do not help and will transpose into one of the above variations especially A!
Good one!
1. … Ne5! wins. For example 2. exd4 Nf3+ 3. Kh1 Qxg3 and checkmate in the next move (4. … Qh2#).
I didn’t get this one immediately-I was way too enamored with Rd1. However, in working Rd1 out, I eventually blindly tripped over the move of Ne5 as a continuation, and finally realized that black doesn’t even have to wait to play it since the rook at d4 is immune:
1. ……Ne5!! (deserves !!)
2. de4? Nf3
3. Kh1 Qg3
And white can’t prevent mate by either Qh2 or Qg1. So, we need to back up to move 2 for white to see if there is any defense at all.
1. ……Ne5
2. Rf2
Preventing Nf3 which was deadly:
2. ……Rd2!
And white must lose the rook since it cannot leave the f-file without allowing Nf3, and…..
3. Rf4 Nf3!
4. Rf3 ef3 and this is surely mate in a few more moves.
Very, very pretty chess tactic.
