A curious situation was seen at this year’s Polish championships. A married couple took first place in both tournaments. Bartosz and Monika Socko got the winner’s trophies at the open and women’s events, respectively.

The 70th Polish Chess Championship 2013 and the 65th Polish Chess Championship for women 2013 took place on 13th-21st April at Sztygarka, Poland.

Both winners obtained the pole position thanks to better tiebreak scores. Bartosz Socko edged rating favorite Grzegorz Gajewski after both arrived to the finish line with 6.5/9 points, while Monika Socko tied with three other players on 6/9.

The couple took 35,000 PLN home (approx. 11,200 US dollars).

Besides the champions, Grzegorz Gajewski and Jolanta Zawadzka got their travel costs covered to attend the next European Individual Championships. Full standings below.
