I am trying to convince my sister Sophia to join us in Budapest at the same time so we can have a special sister reunion 🙂 We appeared together in Las Vegas 2 years ago at the National Open. That was the first time in over 10 years that we have done that. It has also been ages since the three of us do any chess activities together in Budapest. I am looking forward to it. That would make this trip even more memorable for everyone who can join us!

Sophia is great. I met her once at a tournament. I was a little too awestruck to chat much but she was a really lively and interesting person. I had a longer conversation with her boyfriend and I mentioned I had been to Budapest a few times. He suggested I play in the First Saturday tournaments (for those who don’t know, those are weekly tournaments in Budapest set up partly to give untitled masters a chance to play titled players and get norms–I don’t know if they’re still going on). I had to explain that I was just a low rated patzer and those events were way above my level. He invited me to call them if I visited Budapest again. A year or so later I did make another trip there. I looked Sophia up in the phone book and her number was listed but I couldn’t bring myself to call–she doesn’t know me at all, I didn’t know if she still had the same boyfriend, and it would have felt like calling a movie star. But maybe I will get to meet her again (or any of the three sisters) someday.
Sorry, I meant the First Saturday tournaments are MONTHLY tournaments, not weekly. They are (or were) held on the first Saturday of the month, as the name implies.
That would be very exciting! I remember meeting the 3 girls at one of the super strong invitational tournaments in NYC. I have a picture of me with the three of them. I included the picture in a scrap book that I put together for a presentation at an elementary school. The school had women from non-traditional fields speak to the family and kids. I spoke about being a chess teacher, and tournament director. After the talks we each had our own booth. I had my scrap book and played chess with people who stopped by.
It would be great to see all of the Polgar sisters together in Budapest! Then I could get an updated picture with Budapest in the background. I’m really looking forward to the trip!
