Indian GM Akshayraj Kore missed out on the chance to finish among the joint winners when he failed to capitalize on an advantage in the middle game and was held to a draw by IM Swayams Mishra in the final round of the Rs 21.5 lakh prize money 6th Mumbai Mayor International Chess Tournament 2013, hosted by The National Sports Club of India and co-sponsored by LIC of India, being played in the indoor stadium of National Sports Club of India.

At the end of the tournament, three GMs were tied at the top with 8½ points. GM Pantsulaia Levan (ELO 2563) of Georgia was declared the winner on the tiebreak rule but had to share the prize money with GM Mchedlishvili Mikheil (ELO 2645) of Georgia and GM Amonatov Farrukh (ELO 2616) of Tajikistan, the three getting richer by Rs 2,58,666.

GM Akshayraj and IM Mishra, who finished among a bunch of six players in joint second earned Rs 49,333 for their efforts.

GM Akshayraj had a tough opponent in IM Swayams Mishra, who defeated a GM in the penultimate round. Playing white, Akshayraj faced Queens Defense, where he had a slight advantage in the middle game. Maintaining the attack, he regularly exchanged his pieces. However, he made the mistake of going for the exchange of Queens on the 40th.

On the 42nd move Swayams played a6-pawn, wanting to exchange for a passed pawn, gaining equality on the board. Thus with no choice remaining Akshayraj had to share the point.

In the Under-2100, Ramkrishna Perumalla (ELO 2086) of AP was joined by Snehal Bhosale, the Mumbai lad who was joint leader yesterday to share the prize money, earning Rs 1,07,500 each.
