I’d guess that White has just sucker-punched himself.
1 … Rf7 is annihilating.
1.Rf7 Rf6
2.Rxf6
1…R:c3 is the wrong idea because after 2. Q:b8 the Bg5 guards c1.
1…Rf7! is the right idea – the Q can’t leave the h2-b8 diagonal because of 2…Q:h2# and can’t leave the f-file because of 2…Rf1# So white must just surrender material.
Rf7 with the thread of either back rank mate or mate on h2. White can choose wiche of the two it likes best.
41. … Rf7
2. (a) Qxb8 Rf1#
(b) Qxf7 Qxh2#
(c) Qxg4 Rf1#
Mark
I think this could be it:
1…, Rf7
If 2 Qxb8, Rf1#
If 2 Rf6, Rxf6
3 Bxf6, Dxf4 and mate follows soon with Df1 or Dxh2
If 2 Bf6,Dxf4 and the same story
Best regards to everyone
1. … Rf7! 2. Qxc8 Rf1# (2. Qc1 Qxh2#)
1…..Rf7
if white’s queen moves,
her king gets checkmated
if 2.Rf6 Rxf6 no improvement
0-1
Rf7.. if QxQ Rf1++ and if Q covers back rank with Qc1 Qxh2++ or if QxR Qxh2++
Rf7!!
Rf7!
..Qxb8 Rf1#
..Qxf7 Qxh2#
..Re1 Rxf4 -+
..Qc1 Qxh2#
Rf7!!!! If qxq, Rf1#, if qxr, qxh2#,
1. Rf7
Threatens Rf1# and Qxh2#.
Black Queen can’t move and cover both squares.
Rf7
Not at all obvious at first sight.
1…. Rf7
My first action was towards 1… Rxc3 which is boneless and losing.
