White is able to exploit black’s inaccurate plan by opening the center with 8. d4 — to which black responds incorrectly by prematurely relieving the tension in the center by initiating exchanges ending in 9. …exd4?! — giving white a free hand to increase his space and pressure. White patiently builds his advance and after 18. b3 he is ready for a decisive break in the center that leads to the win of ample material.
