Norwood boasts New Mexico state chess champ

Brady Barkemeyer did it again.This time, there was no snowstorm, no traffic jam, no unexpected change of location, no food poisoning to threaten to keep him from playing. No, unlike the state chess tournament in Denver recently, at the New Mexico State Chess Championship in Albuquerque this past weekend, the only thing 9-year-old Brady had to contend with was a huge amount of mental anxiety.

“It looked pretty good starting out,” said his dad Eric Barkemeyer. “We found the place and everything was looking good. I thought, ‘Maybe things will go normal this time.’”

When the Barkemeyers arrived at the tournament, Brady spotted the first place trophy and said, “I gotta have that.”
