GM Nigel Short won his last round’s game against GM Hebden while GM McShane, GM Sulskis, IM Gordon and IM Jones drew and IM Williams lost. This gave Nigel a clear victory at the 2006 European Union Individual Championship in Liverpool, England.
If Hebden was able to hold his game against Short, there would have been a 10-way tie for first. But Short prevailed.

I wanted Nigel to win. I watched his last 4 games. but I was a bit disappointed in the resignation today. I thought it was still a very difficult position with time running low. I thought it could have been played out.
I did not see a good way to finish the game. he was up 2 pawns, but it seemed difficult to move forward. I am sure it could be done. I guess as a high level GM Nigel knew what to do.
