Iranian chess grandmaster Ehsan Qaem Maqami Iranian chess grandmaster Ehsan Qaem Maqami says his success against Russia’s Anatoly Karpov has opened a new chapter in his sports life.

“I have decided to take part in first-class competitions and compete with big competitors to make better progress,” Qaem Maqami said in an interview with IRNA on Tuesday.

“I have also negotiated with some German clubs to participate in the country’s chess league,” he continued.

The 26-year-old Iranian chess grandmaster says he seeks to win the world chess gold medal to bring glory to his country.

“I hope I can achieve this huge success for my country,” he said.

On Monday, Qaem Maqami snatched a victory over seven-time World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov with an overall of 10.5 to 9.5 technical points, winning a prize worth USD 40,000.

The two grandmasters competed with each other in 20 games, nine of which the Iranian master won. The Iranian failed eight times but managed to equal three of the games.

The competitions were held on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran.

The 57-year-old Anatoly Yevgenyevich Karpov was the undisputed world chess champion from 1975 to 1985 and retook the world championship title from 1993 to 1999.

He has been a member of the Public Chamber of Russia, which monitors the Russian parliament since 2005.

Qaem Maqami — who has participated in nearly 40 international events — has an Elo rating of 2604 and was named by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) as the most active and promoting player in 2004. HRF/AA
