A NEW winner will be crowned in the 2016 Brijlal Open Chess Championship on Sunday.

Defending champion and Fiji Chess Federation president, candidate master Calvin Prasad has been ruled out. Following Prasad’s exclusion, last week’s Kundan Singh Open champion Taione Sikivou is the new title favourite.

“We are expecting a huge turnout and have already received 43 registrations,” CM Prasad said.

“The man to watch will be Taione Sikivou. He is fresh off his win last week in the Kundan Singh Open.

“Ronald Terubea and Oscar Elosen are title contenders too. All these players were tied on first place. Taione won following a tie-break. Terubea was second and Elosen finished third,” CM Prasad said.

He said former champion CM Manoj Kumar was expected to come out strongly as well. CM Prasad will not be taking part due to FCF and championship administration work commitments.

He thanked major sponsor Brijlal for its continued support for local chess.

“Brijlal has come on board again and they have been sponsoring the event for over 20 years.”

Sunday’s event will be the held at the Olympic House on Bau Street in Suva from 8.30am.
