Tanraj Sohal won the 2009 Canadian Chess Championship held in Toronto, Ontario on May 17-18 in his grade level.

Tanraj is a 12-year-old Grade 7 student from Surrey. This is the fifth time he has won the Canadian Chess Championship trophy in his grade level. Tanraj earlier won the 2009 Fraser Valley Regional in Surrey and B.C. Provincial Chess Championship held in Burnaby.

Canadian Chess Challenge is the annual event where each province is represented by their 12 provincial champions (one player from Grades 1 to 12). Qualification to the nationals begins with school events, then regionals and provincials.

Canadian Chess Challenge is organized and sponsored by the Chess’n Math Association, Canada’s National Scholastic Chess Organization. Each player plays nine round robin matches over two days in their respective grade against each of the provincial champions.

Tanraj had a score of 8.5/9 and was undefeated against all other nine provincial champions from Alberta through Newfoundland.

Overall, B.C. won three first place trophies this year. Other winners were Dezhong Kong (Grade 4) and Noam Davies (Grade 12).
