Must be a win, since White has an easy draw checking along the a1-h8 diagonal, which wouldn’t make much of a puzzle. With the practice I’ve been doing on QvR endgames, this is a cinch.
1. Qh8+ Kg1
2. Qg7+ Kh1
3. Qh6+ (a straight QvR endgame would have called for 3. Qh7+ for the fork with mate threat on b1, but the pawn changes things)
3. … Kg1
4. Qg6+ Kf1 (or 4. … Kh1 5. Qxc2 with mate on g2; 4. … Kh2, of course, doesn’t do anything.)
5. Qxc2 with mate to follow on e2, f2, or g2.
Is it:
1. Qd6+ Kh1
2. Qh6+ Kg1
3. Qg6+ Kh1
4. QxR mate next move?
1. Qd6+ Kh1 2. Qd1+ Kh2 3. Qxc2+.
Qd6+, then Qd1+…why is this “must know”?
1.Qh8+ Kg1 2.Qg7+ Kh1 3.Qh6+ Rh2 (3…Kg1 4.Qg6+ (4.Qg6+ Kf1 5.Qxc2 a1=Q
6.Qf2#) 4…Kh1) 4.Qc1#
The black king can’t go to h3 even if the queen doesn’t cover the square so a check will force him to the first rank. If the queen can then check on d1 the rook is forked and the game is won. Thus Qd6+
It is a bit easier to see the solution if we take a detour for a moment, which is what I did entirely by mistake, but it helped me see what I needed to see.
1. Qh4 Kg1
2. Qd4 Kh2
Here, Kf1 is obviously mate after Qd1, and Kh1 also is mate after Qd1 in a couple of more moves. So clearly I have wasted two moves here. I can now see that what I want to accomplish is to check the king from the d-file, force him to the 1st rank (or mate him on the h-file), then check again from d1. This suggests immediately
1. Qd6 Kh1/g1 (Kh3 2.Qg3#)
2. Qd1 Kh2
3. Qc2 and mate follows on the next move with either Qg2 or Qh7 depending on where the black king moves.
It looks drawish to me.
Q-h8 +
Q-g7 +
then either Q-h7+ forking the King and Rook or Q-a1 mate.
Qa1
After 1.Qh4+ Kg1, 2. Qe1+ Kh2, 3.Qe5+ Kh1 (or g1), 4.Qa1+ Kh2, 5.Qe1, the black rook has to leave the second rank, leaving the pawn unprotected, and with no checks against the white king. Then white plays Qe2+, say, forking king and pawn, munches the pawn, and then enjoys proving to black that he can win the Q v R ending.
Qd6+ looks good to me.
If
Kh3 Qh6#
Kh1 Qd1+ Kh2 Qxc2+
Kg1 Qd1+ Kh2 Qxc2+
White wins.
1. Qd6+ Kg1
2. Qg6+ K-any
3. QxRc2
4. or 5. Checkmate
1. Qd6+ Kh1
2. Qh6+ Rh2
3. Qc1 Checkmate
1. Qh8+ Kg1
2. Qg7+ Kh2 (or …Kf1 3. Qa1+ winning)
3. Qh7+ Kg1
4. Qc2: and mate next move.
King pinned on the rim, is dim in a Q ending!
1Qe5+ …
2Qe1+ or Qh5+
The plan is to check the black King with white Queen and capture Black Rook with a check so that the a pawn can not be promoted to a queen.
1.Qd6+ Kg1 (or Kh1)[If Kh3 then Qg3# or Qh6#]
2.Qd1+ Kh2
3. Qxc2+
and White wins…
Qd6+ Kg1
Qd1+ Kh2
Qxc2+ Kg1
Qxa2
A win for White
1 Qd6+ Kh1(…Kh3 results in checkmate for black in the next move 2 Qg3)
2 Qd1+ Kh2
3 Qxc2+ Kh3
4 Qxa1 and now white can achieve checkmate
-HH
1 Qd6+ should pick off the rook with tempo, because if …Kh3??, 2 Qg3#. So..
1 …Kg1 (or Kh1)
2 Qd1+ Kh2
3 Qxc2+ Kh3
4 Qh7#
1. Qd6+ (Kh3 2. Qh6#) Kg1/h1 2. Qd1+ Kh2 3. Qxc2+ followed by mate next move.
regards Peter
Hello
1. Qd6+ , Kg1 or Kh1 ( if Kh3 2. Qg3#)
2. Qd1+ , Kh2
3. Qxc2+
3 options for black
A)3. …. , Kh3
4. Qh7#
B) and C)3. …. , Kg1 or Kh1
4. Qh2#
Greetings from Spain
White wins
1. Qd6+
1. … Kh3
2. Qg3 mate
1. … Kg/h1
2. Qd1 + kh2
3. Qxc2+ …
4. Q xa2 then easy win
1.Qd6+ Kh1 (1… Kg1, 2. Qg6+)
2.Qh6+ Kg1 (2… Rh2, 3.Qc1#)
3.Qg6+
If it were black to move it would be zugzwang, so:
Qh8, Qa1, Qd4.
Qh8, Qg7, Qh6, Qg6
Qd6ch, Qd1ch
I expect there are other winning moves, but only one is trivially winning
Qd6+ Kg1
Qd1+ Kh2
Qxc2+
1.Qd6+ Kh1 1.Qd1+ Kh2 3.Qxc2+ +-
Drawish? What about Qd6? Looks winning.
1. Qd6 K
2. Qd1
3. QxR
1. Qh8+ Kg1 2. Qg7+ Kf1 3. Qa1+ Rc1 4. Qxc1# (KO! Yeah… White won) OR 1. Qh8+ Kg1 2. Qg7+ Kh1 3. Qh7+ Kg1 4. Qxc2 a-Q1 5. Qg2# (KO again! Yeah… White Won )

There are various ways to win this. The easiest is:
1 Qd6+ Kh2 (or h1)
1 … Kh3 is met by 2 Qh6#
2 Qh1+
followed by Qxc2+ and mate next.
White can also win the Rook in other ways which will take a bit longer (i.e. Qh8+ followed by Qg7+, Qh7+, Qxc2, and Qg2#).
1. Qd6+ Kg1
2. Qd1+ Kh2
3. Qxc2+ Kg1
4. Qxa2 Kh1
5. Qg2#
