1. …. R7f7 wins
if 2. Rxf7, Qxd1+ 0-1
if 2. Qxg4, Rxf1+ 0-1
if 2. Rfe1 or 2. Rfg1 then
2. … Qxd1
3. Rxd1 Rf1+ 0-1
so the only alternative is 2. Qe1 which simply loses the queen after 2… Rxf1+
Had to take the long view on this one. The obvious choices that I tried first did not work. 1. .. Rxf1+, 1. .. Qe2, and 1. .. e3 all didn’t work out.
Came to the conclusion that 1. .. Rdf7 was the ticket, the main idea being that after the rooks are all exchanged off, Black would be able to advance the e- and d-pawns with force.
Here are some examples. The line in bold characters is probably not the best choice for White, but it gives most clearly the strategic idea I had in mind.
1. … Rdf7 2. Kg1
2. Qe1? Rxf1+ 3. Qxf1 Rxf1+
2. Rxf7?? Qxd1+
2. .. Rxf1+ 3. Rxf1 Rxf1+ 4. Kxf1 Qd1+ 5. Kf2
5. Qe1 Qc2 6. Ba1
(6. Ba3 Qxa2 7. Bc5 Qxb3 8. Bxa7 e3 9. dxe3 d3 10. Bd4 Qc2 11. Bxg7 d2)
(6. Bc1 Qxa2 7. Qd1 Qb1 8. h3 d3 9. Ke1 Qa1 10. b4 Qf6 11. c5 Qh4+ 12. Kf1 Bd4)
6… e3 7. dxe3
(7. Ke2 Bh6 8. Bxd4 exd2 9. Qd1 Qe4+ 10. Kf1 Qd3+ 11. Kf2 Qxd4+)
7. .. d3 8. Bxg7 d2
5. .. Qxd2+ 6. Kf1 e3 7. Qe1 d3 8. Bxg7 e2+ 9. Kf2 Qf4+ 10. Kg1 Qe3+ 11. Kh1 (11. Qf2 e1=Q#) 11. .. d2
I’m sure Marcel Duchamp would have liked watching the end of this game: White gradually descending the staircase and losing his shirt in the bargain.
Rdf7
After taking my own crack at this, I looked up the game score. Alonso did play 31. .. Rdf7, but then Doelzal unfortunately blundered with 32. Rg1?? which, of course, loses immediately to 32. Qxd1
Too bad it ended this way: no slow descent of the staircase, just a precipitous drop into the pit.
