  Nice and simple:

  1. Rf6

  Black has three options-Ke8, ef6, and Qf6. They are all mates:

  1. …..Ke8
  2. Rg8#

  Or, the longest one:

  1. …..ef6
  2. Rg8 Ke7
  3. Rg7 Ke8/f8
  4. Qg8#

  And, lastly:

  1. …..Qf6
  2. Rg8#

  Rxf6+ clearing tha a2-g8 diagonal as well as removing a defender of g8 jumps out, and leads to mate in 5:

  1. Rxf6+ exf6 (1. – Qxf6/Ke8 2. Rg8#)
  2. Rg8+ Ke7
  3. Rg7+ Ke8 (3. – Kf8 4. Qf7#)
  4. Qf7+ Kd8

  Your move 4…. Kd8
  5 Qd8# is unacceptable according to chess protocol. You can mate king with pleasure but not eat him up as some insects do after mating. I am sure you meant 5 Qg8#.
  Venky,Pavan,Jim Lin and myself are guilty of prolonging the game to 5th move.We were obsessed with mate on 7th rank whereas mate on 8th rank Qg8# was overlooked. I detected it as soon as I posted my comment but did not attempt to improve upon it immediately.
