1. … g2 and Zug!!!
By stulzer
1.g2 d7
2.Rb8 d8Q
3.Rxd8 threatening Rh8-h1
Pharaoh
A human player wouldn’t make the useless move 2…d8Q (which actually is 3.d8Q because it’s a white move), and hence probably 2.d7 neither. The last hope is 2.f6 Rb8 3.f7, because now 3…Rh8 does not work: 4.f8Q+! Rxf8 5.Re7 White’s rook can give checks from behind while the bK guards the pawn g2, or Black has to give the g2 pawn.
But after 1…g2 2.f6 Rb8 3.f7, 3…Kg3! is winning: f8Q wouldn’t be a check, so Rh8 etc. will work.
anonymous @ 2:33 has the answer. Finding a way to escape the checks was the key (…Kg3). Good work.
What did Irena play?
Oooh, that’s gotta sting to get called out by Susan like that…tsk, tsk, Irina!
